What are acne scars and what types are there?Acne scars are characterized either by loss of tissue: ice pick / indented scars or depressed fibrotic scars, or they become abnormal formations of new thickened tissues known as fibrotic, hypertrophic or keloid scars.

Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of an area of skin or nails caused by increased melanin. Hyperpigmentation is defined as a surplus of melanin relative to the surrounding skin. This can be the result of either an abnormally high concentration of melanocytes (the pigment-producing cells) producing the melanin or hyperactive melanocytes (cells that produce pigment excessively) in a specific site. Hyperpigmentation can be diffuse or focal, affecting such areas as the face and the back of the hands. UV light stimulates melanocytes activity and hyperpigmentation is increased.
MELASMA (chloasma)
It is thought that melasma is the result of the stimulation of melanocytes by estrogen and progesterone to produce more melanin when exposed to sunlight. Women with light brown skin and who live in regions with intense sunlight are particularly susceptible to developing this condition.
It is very common for melasma to appear during pregnancy or with the use of contraceptive pills. Therefore, a direct relationship with female hormonal activity appears to cause melanocytes to produce and deposit excess pigments. Moreover, this type of pigmentation problem is more common among women than men.
Other factors implicated in melasma are photosensitizing medications, mild ovarian or thyroid dysfunction, and certain cosmetics.
More than 30% of melasma patients have a family history of it signifying a genetic factor. However, identical twins have been reported to develop melasma, while other siblings under similar conditions did not.
Certainly sun exposure is another determining factor in the development of melasma. UV radiation is known to cause the perioxidation of the fatty structure of cell membranes, which leads to the production of free radicals and possibly to the production of more melanin. Sunscreens that primarily block UV-B radiation are unsatisfactory because longer wavelengths also stimulate melanocytes to produce melanin.
