Cystic acne is the worst form of acne that a person can experience. Its consequences are more serious than other types of acne. One of the main characteristics of this type of acne is a deep infection in the tissue that can form nodules. It is also known as acne vulgaris. Acne cysts or acne nodules, are formed when sebum cannot properly outflow to the surface of the skin and causes lesions to the cells lining the walls of the sebum canals. The inflammation of the area is a defense mechanism developed by the body to attack infections. When there are a lot of bacteria, the immune system reacts more powerfully; this often results in a larger size pimple, better known as an acne cyst.

When the body reacts in this way, the outflow of sebum starts. If the flow of sebum exceeds the normal level, bacteria in the follicles and skin surface will produce a larger infection. The condition produced by the overflow of sebum can lead to the formation of pimples as large as five millimeters.

Understanding Acne Cysts

Retention keratosis is another factor that can make facial cysts more severe. This happens when the skin cells, particularly those lining the hair follicle are shed improperly. Improper disposal of cells leads to the clogging of these follicles. The infection can then spill onto other follicles which increase the inflammation and causes acne cysts to spread.

Another factor that may contribute to nodulocystic acne is hormones. The rise of the sebum outflow can be influenced by hormones such as testosterone and androgen. If the sebum ducts are not clear for the outflow to reach the surface of the skin swiftly, they become clogged and cysts are formed. The lifestyle and the genetic background of a person also influence the severity of acne. Stress behavior can contribute to or even increase acne.

Even though this type of acne is severe, there are ways of treating acne cysts. A helpful option is an oral medication called Accutane. It works by reducing the size of the oil glands and thereby controlling acne production. Acne may be cleared with this product however some people who have taken Accutane experienced depression as a side effect. It is recommended that this drug only be taken if all other methods have failed.

Another option can be provided by a dermatologist and it uses cortisone as the active ingredient. They are extremely effective, painless and instantly reduce redness and inflammation. After the injection is administrated the pimple is lowered to the skin level making it less noticeable. There are a few side effects such as temporary whitening of the skin and even indentation around the injection area.

It may be difficult to cure cystic acne however it is not a lost cause. This type of acne requires a special acne skin care treatment since some could worsen the condition. Natural acne products are available that treat cystic acne as well as improve the skin in general.
