Keratosis Palmaris - Facts, Causes, and Treatment

by Catalina Igor

Keratosis Palmaris is a group of skin disorders that are hereditary, also known as palmoplantar keratoderma. These disorders cause the skin on the palms and soles of feet to thicken. The skin thickens because of an overproduction of keratin protein that causes the excessive growth of the stratum corneum (hyperkeratosis).

Types of Palmoplantar Keratoderma

This group of skin affections is divided into categories. There are inherited variations, and within those, three distinct types that differ in epidermal development. These include diffuse PPK, focal PPK, and punctate keratoderma.

Diffuse Palmoplantar Keratoderma

This type causes a consistent yellow thickening across the entire surface of the skin on palms and soles. This disorder can start as early as the first few months of life.

Focal Palmoplantar Keratoderma

This type of PPK is the localized thickening of skin in particular areas of the palms or soles. This type starts in the first two years of life. These areas are usually those that experience higher levels of pressure or friction.

Punctate Keratoderma

This type creates small bumps due to concentrated hyperkeratosis. These tiny papules may cover the entire skin surface of the palms or soles, or may be apparent in only certain areas. The onset of this disorder is anywhere between the ages of 10 and 70.
